
Sarah Brooks
Senior Project Coordinator for Supporting Families
Dr. Sarah Westerfield Brooks is the Senior Project Coordinator for Supporting Families at the University of Missouri–Kansas City, Institute for Human Development. With a Ph.D. in Special Education from the University of Pittsburgh, she is a dedicated advocate for individuals with disabilities and their families, focusing on strengthening family-professional partnerships and fostering collaboration across multidisciplinary teams.
Dr. Brooks is a LEND Fellow and began her career in Pennsylvania, working with the PA Family Network and contributing to the state’s developmental disability system. After relocating to Ohio, she became a leader within the Office for Exceptional Children at the Ohio Department of Education, spearheading statewide initiatives to enhance student-centered practices and family engagement in schools. She played a key role in Ohio’s Community of Practice (CoP) on Supporting Families, helping to drive meaningful change in transition planning and family support efforts.
Now at UMKC, Dr. Brooks continues to lead initiatives that improve systems of support, shape policies, and implement innovative practices that foster inclusive educational environments. Her work spans early intervention through adulthood, ensuring that individuals with diverse learning needs receive the support necessary to thrive at every stage of life.
Dr. Brooks is deeply committed to empowering students, families, and educators, ensuring that every individual—regardless of ability—has access to opportunities that promote success and independence.
